FrSky has recently announced their new ultra mini receiver – FrSky R-XSR. If you are using FrSky transmitter like Taranis X9D or Taranis Q X7 you should have a look at this tiny new receiver.
According to FrSky, the new R-XSR receiver is “the evolution of FrSky full range XSR receiver”. However, the new receiver is 1/3 size and 1/3 weight of the XSR receiver. It could perfectly replace the FrSky XM+ receivers we are using. Compared to those the new mini receiver support telemetry and Smart Port.
Here is a quick comparison of both mini receivers:
R-XSR | XM+ | |
Size | 16mm x 11mm x 5.4mm | 21.5mm x 12mm x 3.5mm |
Weight | 1.5g | 1.6g |
Number of channels | 16 (16 SBUS / 8 CPPM) | 16 (16 SBUS / 8 CPPM) |
Operating Voltage Range | 3.5~10V | 3.7V~10V |
Operating Current | 70mA @ 5V | 30mA @ 5V |
Full Range | Yes | Yes |
Telemetry and Smart Port | Yes | No |
The R-XSR receiver is a bit smaller and a bit lighter than the XM+ receiver. Additionally, you can see the telemetry data (like battery voltage) on the display of your Taranis transmitter.
The R-XSR is available already at multirotorparts.com and should be available soon for international buyers at Banggood.
Minimum input voltage is 3.5V for the R-XSR, your article incorrectly lists 3.0V.
Hi, Larry you absolutely correct. I found it on the FrSky webpage here: https://www.frsky-rc.com/frsky-ultra-mini-redundancy-receiver-r-xsr/ However in the manual it says indeed 3.5V. Thanks for spotting 😉 Best wishes, Sergey
Hi, I found the R-XSR already in stock in europe:

What receiver would you recommend to use as a slave? Should I use a 2nd R-XSR or is a XM+ good enough?
Thanks a lot for your help.
Hey Max, yeah it is available in some European stores already. What do you mean with “slave”? What is the purpose you want to use it? Best, Sergey
Hey Sergey,
thanks a lot for you reply.
In the manual they write about a master and slave receiver for the redundancy function. The R-XSR is the master and any other receiver is the slave.
I was wondering if I should use the XM+ or better go for a 2nd R-XSR.
Thank you.
Max
Hey Max, yeah got it. You can use the XM+ as a slave receiver, yes. If you check the manual, it is even recommended to use the XM+. Grüße, Sergey
Hey,
okay thank you, I will try the xm+ 🙂
Hello Max, have you already tried it out? Can you give an update if it works? Best, Sergey
Opensky Reciever for FrSky is much much smaller:
