Review: Scorpion M2204 2300kv
I received a sample of Scorpion 2204 2300kv from Scorpion Power System for a review. I will put it on my thrust stand and test it on 3S and 4S LiPo with 6” and 5” propellers. The testing ESC is Afro Race 20A flashed with SimonK 2015-09 (comp_pwm and motor_brake enabled).
Stator Diameter: 22mm
Magnet Poles: 14
My first impression is very good. The motor is well made and doesn’t look cheap. Compared to the quality of the T-Motor MN2206 and the Cobra CM2204, I can say it is almost the same. There is also no vertical play in the bell. The Scorpion M2204 2300kv is well balanced and I haven’t experience any vibrations.
The motor feature an integrated 5mm threaded motor shaft, so I can directly mount my KingKong propellers.
The motor wires are 20AWG and 98mm long. These don’t have any bullet connectors, so you can easily solder them to the ESC. The Scorpion M2204 have standard M2.5 16×12 mounting holes, as well as two M3 19mm holes.
I find the motor thrust data on the Scorpion website to be way different/bellow from my tests. Not sure how they have tested the motor and what ESC they have used. Anyway, here are my results:
Scorpion M2204 2300kv – 6×4.5 propeller – 3S 3300mAh 30-40C Turnigy battery
|50% Throttle||320g thrust||5.25A current|
|100% Throttle||797g thrust||18.58A current|
Scorpion M2204 2300kv – 6×4.5 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar battery
|50% Throttle||479g thrust||7.46A current|
|100% Throttle||970g thrust||27.4A current|
Scorpion M2204 2300kv – KingKong 6×4 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar
|50% Throttle||418g thrust||6.82A current|
|100% Throttle||936g thrust||24.81A current|
The motor get very hot with 6” propeller on 4S. The bell temperature was over 65° C. But that is normal, as this small motor is rated for max 175W and not 350W 🙂 On 3S you will be fine with a 6” prop.
Scorpion M2204 2300kv – HQ 5×4.5 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar
|50% Throttle||320g thrust||4.75A current|
|100% Throttle||769g thrust||17.23A current|
Tested the motor with the HQ 5×4.5 props at about 60% throttle for over one minute. The measured temperature of the bell was fine, about 50° C.
I think I can get some more thrust with a BLHeli ESC, like the awesome LittleBee 20A ESC, but overall I am happy with the results. In my opinion the motor is great for 210mm race quads on 4S battery.
The package contains: two Scorpion M2204 2300kv motors (CW + CCW), two bullet nuts and mounting screws. Official price is 44.99$, which makes 22,49$ for a motor.
