Cobra CM2204 2300kv
I was asked to review the Cobra CM2204 2300kv motor and compare it with other 2300kv motors. Let’s start first with some details:
Dimension: Φ27.9 × 14.2mm
Stator Diameter: 22mm
Magnet Poles: 14
The Cobra 2204 has a bit lower profile, than the Scorpion M2204 and LDPower FR2204, that I have previously reviewed. Beside that, all three have almost the same weight. The build quality of the Cobra motor is great, but it is hard to tell if it’s better than the others. Personally I find it the same.
You have some mounting screws and a lock nut in the package. The cable length is about 100mm and you have no gold connectors soldered – pretty normal for all motors in that class. The cobra CM2204 has an integrated 5mm propeller shaft, just as the Scorpion, the LDPower and the new F-Series T-Motors.
The mounting holes are standard M3 19 x 16mm.
I have tested the motor with 5” propellers on 4S, because this is the most used FPV configuration. The first test is with the KISS24A Race ESC and HQ5045 prop:
KISS24A – HQ5×4.5 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar battery
|50%||295g thrust||3.70A current|
|100%||851g thrust||18.5A current|
No sync problems and perfect response. I cant do a perfect comparison to the Scorpion M2204 motor, because I have used an Afro 20A SimonK ESC for my tests. But I got a bit better results (884g) with the LDPower FR2204 motor on same 4S configuration.
Next thrust test is with one of my favorite ESCs – the HobbyWing XRotor 15A.
XRotor 15A – HQ5×4.5 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar battery
|50%||283g thrust||3.70A current|
|100%||837g thrust||18.24A current|
Again, a bit less thrust – 38g – than the LDPower. Everything else went perfect.
Finally I tested the Cobra motor with the EMAX Nanotech 12A ESC, that I have just received. It is a custom firmware ESC, like the XRotor 15A.
EMAX Nanotech 12A – HQ5×4.5 propeller – 4S 16.000mAh 10C Multistar battery
|50%||400g thrust||6.76A current|
|100%||840g thrust||18.66A current|
The Cobra CM2204 is a great motor for your 210-250mm FPV racer, but I can’t say for sure it is the best one out there. The new T-Motor F40 has a better build quality in my opinion and the LDPower FR2204 outperforms a bit the Cobra in terms of provided thrust. Add to this the fact that some motors perform better with specific ESC and it is almost impossible to tell which one is “The Best”. If you are fine with the 21$ price of the Cobra CM2204, you will no regret choosing it. If you have used the Cobra motor, leave a comment and let me know what do you think about it.
It’s worth noting in your review that the CM2204 is actually a 2205 size stator. 😀 Good review though. Interesting that the LDPower outoerfirmed it! It would be nice to include amp draw on your thrust numbers as well to compare efficiency.
Hey QuadMcFly, I haven’t measured the stator size, but I think it is 4mm. Will check that again. The numbers for the LDPower motor are in part II of its review. Sergey
I’ll be interested to hear the actual stator size of the LDPower once you crack it open. If it is truely 2204 that will be the first 2204 I’ve seen that can beat the Cobra’s 2205 stators! Good stuff! Thanks for testing!
They are all now mounted on my primary quad with the KISS FC, but could do that. I just need to take care and not brake the clip lol.
Ha ha, no wories, I don’t want you to break your flying quad! I just got the XNova “2204” 2300kv in to test, and they’re 2205 as well! So far the most powerful true 2204 I’ve tested was the RotorGeeks 2204. Even the new SunnySky Edge motors are 4.5mm tall. With the current 2205 craze, I’m not sure why these guys don’t just call them 2205! 😛
I dont like that fact too, but I think it is some kind of marketing lol. Same as calling all ESCs without a BEC, an OPTO.
Will read your results about the XNova, looks like a good motor. You have done an amazing work with all of your tests too! Cheers, Sergey
could you test some 5045BN props, too? I think those are the most common props for this motor.
Hey Tim, I have tested it with the KingKon 5045 BN and got about 44g more thrust, but efficiency dropped significantly. I have mentioned this in the article about the 5″ props.
And now they for sale at good price 9.9$ at Surveilzone! Bought 6 pcs!
